HOME PARTIES ON THE INCREASE AS PEOPLE TRY TO SAVE MONEY

Special Effects Room

Electrical wholesalers Anson Electronics, based on the Boulevard in Hull, has noticed a significant rise in the number of people buying disco lights and smoke machines specifically so they can party at home.

Sue Hulme, Director at Anson Electronics, said:

"In response to our customer feedback, we've recently set up a special effects demonstration room so that people can see what they're getting and how a room can be transformed so easily, before they buy.

Getting a few party lights is an inexpensive way to create a great atmosphere for your party at home – and people are often surprised at the cost. They've also told us how they prefer not to worry about drinking and driving, smoking at home and so on."

The company says that with many members of the public tightening their financial belts, many simply can't afford to, or don't want to, hire venues and pay for catering for the likes of birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas and New Year parties.

Debbie Anson, co-Director, said:

"Instead, our customers are converting their garages, sheds or just transforming a room for a special celebration. We've seen over the last few years a noticeable rise in sales for disco lights, smoke and, of course, at this time of year, snow machines!"

Ansons also suggest the following tips for partying at home if you don't want a hangover by overspending!

  • Plan ahead so you don't rush out on the day buying things you think you need, but really don't!
  • Make your own invitations
  • Prepare your own nibbles. Don't buy expensive pre-packaged food.
  • Get people to bring a bottle, if it's an adult party.
  • Don't forget your party lights or bubble machine! It doesn't cost much and the results are amazing!

PLANNING PERMISSION TO RESTORE RAILINGS AT HISTORIC BUILDING

Electronic and electrical suppliers and wholesalers, Anson Electronics Ltd, has been granted planning permission to restore the railings in front of its historic building.

Anson's premises, on The Boulevard in Hull, used to be the Hull and Sculcoates Dispensary for the Relief of the Poor between 1898 and the introduction of the NHS. Many well known local names were involved, including, they believe, the surgeon Sir Henry Cooper, who may even have lived in the 3rd floor flat, as the surgeons often did.

Sir Henry Cooper came from a wealthy family of whaling ship owners. He was distinguished for much civic work and was Mayor when Queen Victoria visited in 1854, on which occasion he was knighted. He was both a consulting surgeon and then a physician to the then Hull General Infirmary, and was very involved in trying to improve the sanitary condition of Hull.

Owners Sue Hulme and Debbie Anson, who are this year celebrating 35 years in business, are delighted.

Sue Hulme said:

"We're absolutely thrilled at the news. This building is an important part of Hull's history and we want it to look as it was originally intended."

ANSON ELECTRONICS ON BBC RADIO HUMBERSIDE

Anson Electronics appeared on BBC Radio Humberside on Wednesday 4th August as guests of the Lara King Morning Show.

Sue Hulme and Debbie Anson were interviewed by presenter David Reeves, who was standing in for Lara who was enjoying a summer holiday!

The two sisters spoke about their family business, based on The Boulevard in Hull, which was originally set up by their father in an air-raid shelter at the bottom of their garden during the recession in the 1970's. They also discussed what it was like working in, what has always been thought of as, a man's world.

They then put David on the spot, asking him to identify a number of gadgets they had been asked to bring along to the studio.

Sue Hulme said:

"We had a fantastic time at Radio Humberside. It was the first time we'd been on radio but everyone was really friendly and helpful. And David Reeves, to be fair, didn't do badly at all when we quizzed him on some of the gadgets we brought in!"

Debbie Anson said:

"It was a great experience and hopefully we also showed people the types of things that they can buy from us and how many things can be repaired at a fraction of the cost of buying new."

WOMEN AND WIDGETS – IN A MAN’S WORLD!

It may always have been considered a man’s world, but two sisters who have been running their own business specialising in electronics, are proving that’s not necessarily the case!

Sue Hulme and Debbie Anson, of electrical and electronic suppliers and wholesalers Anson Electronics Ltd on The Boulevard, Hull, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, can’t remember a time when they weren’t involved in gadgets. The business was originally set up by their father during the recession in the ‘70’s, originally in an air-raid shelter at the bottom of their garden!

Sue Hulme said:

“Knowing everything about things like cables, home security, stereos, headphones, intercoms, speaker systems and disco and stage lighting is second nature to us. I think men are often surprised when they walk in and see that we’re two women. But by the time they leave, they realise we know our stuff!”

Supplying to the trade, retail, manufacturing and education sectors, Anson’s specialise in everything electrical, from cabling and communication to TV, satellite and what’s required, for example, for digital switchover.

Interestingly, research has shown that there are now three times more women than a decade ago prepared to roll up their sleeves and have a go at sorting things out for themselves.

Debbie Anson said:

“We think it’s fantastic that more and more women are becoming interested in fixing things around the home. It’s always been thought of as a man’s role, but I think we’re proving that women are just as capable if they put their minds to it. We have been surrounded by gadgets all our lives and we're always happy to give advice were we can.

“Quite often people don't know the correct names for things they need. This is where we come into our own, helping people with their thingy-me-bobs and whatsits!”

Their main competitors, big corporations like Maplins, Comet and B&Q, even send customers to Anson’s when they haven't got the particular bit to get the job going. And surprisingly, over the years, the sisters have found that even though they’ve been in business for 35 years, some people still confuse them with a different company.

Sue Hulme said:

“People sometimes get confused between us, Anson Electronics, and Hanson Electrical. They think we just drop the “H” and it’s the way we talk because we’re from Hull! But Anson, not Hanson, is our family name! We are a totally separate company – and sell completely different things.”
